BUD UP SOCIAL APP
Moving to Barcelona is an incredibly social experience. Due to it´s highly metropolitan atmosphere, where you can meet people from literally almost any country in the world, it´s almost impossible not to make friends very quickly after arriving here. There is a huge abundance of different activities and social events to fit the taste and interest of most people, however for some it is very often the case that they still feel lonely or isolated after having relocated. Perhaps these individuals are more introverted and don´t necessarily enjoy large groups with a lot of social interaction, or they have a very specific set of interests or hobbies, which they would like to enjoy with like-minded individuals, but they experience difficulty in finding these people.
It can also be that they come from a culture where, once a social arrangement is organised, it is expected that if you confirm that you will attend, you will stick to your commitment and arrive on time. Suddenly they experience a change in culture where people may either cancel last minute, show up very late or not show up at all, adding to the disappointment and difficulty in establishing the desired social network they were hoping for.
Fortunately there now exists a new app, called Bud Up – a platform that allows users to easily create a profile by signing in through their Facebook profile and then accessing a list of activities that are taking place nearby. Users can also create and publish their own activities, which in turn will be visible to other nearby users.
WHO CAME UP WITH THIS GREAT IDEA?
The idea for Bud Up came from Ægir Þór Steinarsson, who started university at the mature age of 34, which is common in Scandinavia, but not in Spain. This factor, combined with his very introverted personality and interest in non-conventional hobbies made it hard for him to develop a group of friends. He tried a lot of things and got to know some people along the way but he wasn´t quite achieving what he wanted in terms of friends to share his quirky hobbies. He really wanted to use Meetup for example but big events like that are very intimidating for introverts, and they also very often spin off into pure socializing and partying, in spite of the original theme or idea of the group.
He decided to do something about it and started doing interviews with people – one of which was Anne-Marthe Lorck, who studied at the same University as him. What he discovered was that a lot of people were like him and were simply not developing a network of friends after moving away from home. Then there were others like Anne that had a good group of friends but was missing someone to share some of her more specific hobbies with. They started working together on this and have been doing so for more than a year. The result is Bud Up!
Ægir describes himself as an introvert who loves to travel and meet new people, especially when it comes to seeking out new cultures and experiences. He loves training and thinks that running is the best way to explore a new city.
Anne-Marthe is a foodie who is also passionate about training and spends a lot of time at the gym, lifting weights, socialising and enjoying a good meal after a great workout.
Both of them have lived in foreign countries before settling on Barcelona. They consider themselves as problem-solvers and entrepreneurial spirits. They realized the opportunity existed to combine forces and create a solution not only for expats, but for anyone who is looking for a new way to expand their social network.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
As an example: you are an avid 70s Sci-Fi movie fanatic, and you are looking for other people that share your interest. You could publish an event where other users can join you at a screening of a movie and you can specify the time and date, location and a description of the activity. If there is any fee involved, in this case a movie ticket, this is also published. As soon as someone confirms that they want to join the activity, a chat option becomes available, allowing for interaction between all users participating in the activity.
WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD BUD UP?
Bud Up can downloaded from the Android Play store where it already enjoys a 5-star user rating.
