BEACHES IN BARCELONA
A big attraction of moving to Barcelona is that it has 9 beaches in total that belong directly to the city. Starting from the most southern they are:
- Sant Sebastia Beach
- Sant Miguel Beach
- Somorrostro Beach
- La Barceloneta
- Nova Icaria
- La Mar Bella
- Llevant Beach
Let´s have a quick look at the most popular ones :
La Barceloneta : One of the most central beaches in Barcelona is La Barceloneta, with the closest metro line being La Barceloneta (L4). Barceloneta is the busiest beach in Barcelona where you can find many beach bars – “chiringuitos” and restaurants. In the Summer it is literally crowded mainly by tourists (the locals usually choose beaches outside the city) and it is hard to find a space to lie down. You should be aware that there are pickpockets, so you shouldn’t leave your belongings alone. Another great thing about Barceloneta beach is that during the high season it is full of beach merchants that offer beer, coke , water, massages etc. In other words – if you are looking for a calm, relaxing sunbathing – Barceloneta is not your beach.
Nova Icaria : Nova Icaria is situated a little bit more in the north of Barceloneta. The closest metro is Ciutadella Villa Olimpica (Yellow Line – L3). This beach is also famous for its chiringuitos – which are busy during the day and during the night when they become music bars. Outside the busiest season (when there are not so many people anymore) you can find many people playing beach volleyball and other beach sports. Just behind Nova Icaria beach is big shopping center where you can have lunch or go and see some movie after your sunbathing. As a matter of fact, the cinema (called Yelmo Icaria) is one of the few cinemas in Barcelona where they show movies in original version.
Beaches in Barcelona North
In the North there are many small villages with amazing and quiet beaches. For example : Mataró, Masnou, Montgat, Premia del Mar, Sant Pol de Mar (one of our favorites), and Blanes are only some of them. From Blanes to the north, starts the famous Costa Brava – beautiful small coastal cities and great beaches. Our advice is to explore the beaches outside Barcelona whenever you have a chance, especially if you have a car and you are not restricted to where the Renfe stops.
Beaches in the South
In the South is one of the most famous beaches outside of Barcelona, called Castelldefels. It has a long and wide beach line and as such means that you don´t have to fight for a spot on the beach. Another must-see in the south is Sitges – The beach in Sitges is not the biggest, but the whole village is a must see, because of its beautiful unique architecture. This is also where the annual Sitges Film Fesitval is hosted in October. If you travel even further south towards Taragonna, you will find even less touristic beaches, such as Coma Ruga and Altafulla, where camping sites are abundant, not to mention exceptionally clean and with excellent facilities.
There are also some famous nude beaches in Barcelona, one of which is the unofficial nude beach called Mar-Bella. To see a full list of other nude beaches, have a look here
