FREE DANCE CLASSES IN BARCELONA

I guess all of us have different first impressions of the city, and different things that made us fall in love with Barcelona.

In my case it was the feeling you get when you walk around the street and hear music from somewhere – could be Spanish guitar, violin or a Cuban music. Then you turn around and see all the people stop to listen to it and some of them even dancing. I remember once seeing an old couple maybe 60-70 years old, dancing to the music and by the way they moved you would never be able to tell their age. They were lost in the moment, in the music, in the dance.

As someone said once “Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we’re here we should dance”.

I suggest that everyone take these words literally and dance.  As you may be new in Barcelona and you still haven’t found which is your preferred dance – Salsa, Tango, Samba, Bachata, Hip-Hop, or maybe you just want to try all of them, we decided to prepare a list of places where you can go and try some free classes.

SALSA: If you always wanted to try some Salsa dancing, the Barcelona Salsa group on Meetup is a great option, especially since they organize Salsa dancing meetups at various different clubs in Barcelona, giving you the opportunity to try a different venue every time. They also do Bachata and Tango from time to time, in case you want to mix it up a little bit. Even though this isn’t technically a “class”, the other members would likely be more than happy to welcome you and show you the basics to warm up those feet. Another option for Salsa dancing is Antilla Salsa Barcelona. They offer free workshops from time to time and they’re the oldest Salsa club in Barcelona, having opened in 1993. Entrance is free on Wednesdays but you are required to buy minimum 1 drink.

SAMBA: If you are curious to try some Samba (or Lambada, Axe and Forro) you should go to Samba Brasil. It is located close to Horta metro station on Plaça Santes Creus 20. The free class is on Thursday evenings after 22.30, but you need to buy a drink. Have a look at their website for more activities and general information.

I don’t know about you, but in my opinion an hour and a half of Samba is much better than the same amount of time at the gym, and the results will be the same! Plus you get to meet really interesting people and learn about the Brazilian culture! They also offer a wide variety of natural exotic fruit juices and milkshakes to send your tastebuds dancing as well.

TANGO and SWING: If you don’t mind dancing under the sky, you should visit Parc Ciutadella in the afternoons. In the warm evenings on the Glorieta (the stage located in the park) you can find many people dancing Tango, Swing and other styles. Especially in the summer the atmosphere is amazing and magical.

At the Casino of Barcelona there is a venue called The Cotton Club lounge, where you participate in free tango lessons every Sunday from 18h30 – 23h00. The event is hosted by Maxi and the staff of Milonga Grata. Keep in mind that participation is only allowed to those over the age of 18.

Getting back to Meetup.com, you will find a good number of Tango dancing meetup groups to participate in. Some of them offer the first lesson for free and after that you pay a small amount. It´s just a matter of finding the right meetup group for you.

If you are looking for a school where to practice some dance style we can recommend “Leo Zunda Escuela de baile” from personal experience. It is situated at Carrer de Bailèn, 64 and they have Salsa, Bachata, and Hip Hop classes, including some extra workshops during the weekends. The school offers classes for grown-ups and for kids. Every Sunday there are open classes and every month or every two months they organize free classes, where you can go and try the different dances, before you decide which one is the right one for you.
